On November 4, 1979, a group of Iranian students stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, taking more than 60 American hostages. They were released after being in captivity for 444 days. I was a Junior in high school in 1979. I had many friends who were female and citizens of Iran at school. They dressed like us. The Iranian males were small and I did not like one of them. After a few months, President Jimmy Carter expelled all Iranian citizens from the U.S. I still wonder what happen to my Iranian girlfriends to this day. I was so angry during those 444 days
The day after I graduated, I went to the Army recruiter’s office and took their test. They told me I could pick whatever field I wanted. I told them I want infantry and I wanted to kill Iranians. They were honest with me and told me that the U.S. wasn’t going to war with Iran. I thanked them and departed. I commend anyone who has made the commitment to serve in our armed serves. As for me, I viewed the military as a model of a caste system as India had. No matter how high you rose in the enlisted ranks and no matter how smart you are, a freshly minted Lieutenant could give you orders and you had to obey. That didn’t sit well in my young mind and for me, I would not subject myself to that and the signing away of my civilian rights not to kill Iranians.
No hostages were killed. By contrast, China is killing 60,000 U.S. citizens every year with their shipments of fentanyl to the U.S. I have to wonder why our President hasn’t expelled every Chinese citizen from the U.S. for this crime. Back some eight years ago, a dog food company in China was mixing a plastic additive into the food. This additive mimics protein. Hundreds of dogs died in the U.S. and thousands worldwide. China’s government executed a few members on the board of that company for that fraud. It looks as though our dog’s lives carry more weight than ours. It’s ironic in my mind because they eat dogs in China.
Why are we still trading with China? Why haven’t we blocked China’s access to our internet to prevent their intellectual theft and cyberattacks? Why haven’t we sanctioned the Western companies that operate in China or have their products produced in China? Why aren’t we at least in a cold war with China? Why aren’t we seizing all ships from China?
Will President Trump carry through?
